Course content:
  • Shotgun Instructor Training consists of approximately 8 hours of classroom training and an additional 2 hours of training on the range.
  • A written test is administered at the end of the classroom day. A score of 90% or better on this exam is a requirement for Instructor certification.
  • Basic Instructor Training (BIT) will be held on the second day of training. This course is intended for all adults regardless of previous shooting experience or NRA-affiliation. An NRA Certified Training Counselor will validate comprehension and application of gun safety rules; range protocol; proper handling; loading and unloading procedures; application of pistol shooting fundamentals; stable shooting positions; live fire; and final shooting qualification.
  • BIT takes approximately 7 hours. If this is your first Instructor credential, or if it has been more than 24 months since you have taken NRA Basic Instructor Training, you are required to take this course again.
  • Satisfactorily complete an NRA Instructor Training Course for Shotgun Shooting, and receive the endorsement of the NRA Training Counselor conducting your training.
  • Submit your application with the appropriate certification fee. Membership in the National Rifle Association is strongly recommended. Certified Ratings are available to individuals who wish to be fully qualified to conduct basic courses (21 years of age or older).
